KIPP Metro Atlanta Establishes Recovery Fund

"We have had an outpouring of support from the community. We are so grateful for the numerous offers to help."

December 10, 2010 - In response to the fire at KIPP WAYS Academy on the morning of December 10, KIPP Metro Atlanta has established the KIPP WAYS Academy Recovery Fund to receive donations to cover the cost of relocation and supplies. The fire destroyed the roof of the facility and subsequent water damage has significantly damaged the building and classrooms.

"We have had an outpouring of support from the community. We are so grateful for the numerous offers to help. The best way to help at the moment is to donate to the KIPP WAYS Academy Recovery Fund by visiting our website at www.kippmetroatlanta.org. We will also provide updates on our website and Facebook page," said David Jernigan, Executive Director of KIPP Metro Atlanta and founder of KIPP WAYS Academy.

KIPP METRO ATLANTA SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

KIPP Metro Atlanta enjoyed several days last week collaborating with approximately 2,700 other members of the KIPP Team and Family from across the nation at the 2010 KIPP Summit in Las Vegas. At the closing reception, a KIPP Metro Atlanta teacher and student received exciting honors.

Dorothy Hull, a social studies teacher at KIPP South Fulton Academy, received one of 10 KIPP Excellence in Teaching Awards. The honor comes with a $10,000 award! See her story link below: www.kipp.org/eit-kipp-sfa

Asile Patin, an eighth grader at KIPP WAYS Academy, received one of 6 Doris Fisher KIPPster of the Year Awards. This honor comes with a $10,000 award toward a college scholarship! Asile's link is below: www.kipp.org/koty-kipp-ways

Additionally, KIPP Metro Atlanta Executive Director David Jernigan and KIPP WAYS Academy alumnus Charles King appeared on WUPA's Focus Atlanta this past Sunday.

May 11, 2010 - We are pleased to announce that on Monday, May 11th, the Atlanta Board of Education approved the charter application for KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School.

"We are pleased to expand our partnership with KIPP," said Atlanta Public Schools superintendent, Dr. Beverly Hall."KIPP has a track record of strong results both locally and nationally, and we are confident that KIPP Atlanta Collegiate will be an excellent addition to our high school portfolio."

"We are thrilled to have the support of the Atlanta Board of Education. KIPP Atlanta Collegiate will provide a rigorous college-preparatory high school option for students in the City of Atlanta," said KIPP Metro Atlanta executive director, David Jernigan.

Upon its opening in 2011, KIPP Atlanta Collegiate will be the 5th KIPP school in metro Atlanta.

SAN ANTONIO, TX - In a gala awards ceremony last night, KIPP eighth grader Shaunteri Skinner received a $10,000 Doris Fisher Award, and teacher Aimee Pierre received a $10,000 KIPP Excellence in Teaching Award.
