KIPP WAYS GOES TO BRAZIL!

Trip Description

What does the Black experience truly encompass? In order to answer this question, it is not only necessary to explore the rich societies of Ancient Africa, but also the entire African Diaspora. And in no place on Earth are the descendants of the hundreds of millions of enslaved Africans more abundant than in the country of Brazil. It is because of this historical and cultural significance that our scholars chose to visit the country.

However, this was more than a mere visit. Rather it was a journey of SELF-DISCOVERY and a CULTURAL EXCHANGE that no textbook could ever teach. The 8th grade scholars of KIPP WAYS used the African drumming and capoeira techniques learned in class to engage with the people of Bahia. In Salvador, they participated in a social development project involving a school, a children’s day-care center, medical center, and small business center, all financed by the people of the community. Finally, the scholars visited a quilombo (place where fugitive Africans hid during slavery) before departing for the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro.
